I only recommend to do that if the computer is a fast one... in mine i do segments of clips in order to prevent lagging and not seeing the whole masking scene cause it's really laggy previewing the whole vid.

Honestly, i think it's just an opacity change... Instead of using 100% use like 20% while playing a background video (or picture).

Go to the video track tab and change the opacity of it.

About the ring... cmon, that's easy to do.

That's a codec problem. The one i installed in order to use avi files in sony vegas (8.0 btw) was K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 5.7.0 (and an adicional AVI codec pack Lite)...
