I agree with some of the things arzuro has to say; I wouldn't mind if some aspects of anime and anime culture were stripped away.

And I don't think anime fans have much of a "geek" image. Hyperactive psychos would be a better description.

Personally, the character trait I think is most important in anime is depth. They can't be impulsive robots; they need opinions, hopes, aspirations, fears, and they need to come off realistically, not just yell out their emotions and stomp around.

Started between 3 and 5 with Speed Racer and Voltron. Sort of put it off until I watched DBZ at 6 AM on a saturday morning (before it was on Cartoon Network), but I still didn't really pay much attention to the whole genre until Gundam Wing aired. That was the first show I truly appreciated as anime.
