if you dont mind crying al ittle Saikano is fantastic choice. Other great favorites of mine that I recommend: Haibane Renmei Kino's journey Millenium Actress They are all very character based and not much action, but I sort of prefer htat kind of anime best. Saikano being my absolute favorite of all.

I agree with Thistledown. the female characters Reki and Chise of Haibane Renmei and Saikano are very very complex.

Princess Mononoke is another wonderful work from Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. While it isn't my favorite Ghibli Title, it still is one of the better anime movies you could see.
