Render clips / finished works lossless. Use Ut or at least Lagarith. Use the space, you want the quality. Recode the output file compressed with something like Zarx264gui.

What codecs are you using in your clips? If it has to work with compressed stuff like Xvid maybe that slows it down. My little netbook previewed Ut clips pretty good.

I've had Vegas do the 'render black' thing when I've had several tracks being rendered at once. Had to render a couple as a background then add the upper ones in to that. Don't know if switching to lagarith would have helped.

Sony Vegas by default creates a backup of the project you are working on (at least it used to) that would be named "PROJECTNAME.veg.bak" in the same save folder. Look for those to restore crashed projects. Do you have any F/X or transition packages installed? I had lots of crashed when I had NewBlue...

Lossless clips are uncompressed, rather like a bitmap picture compared to a jpeg. NEVER edit with compressed clips (Xvid, DivX, MP4........).
