Woah it's hard to belive that they used only particular and ae,this looks like more made in 3ds max+krakatoa+fume fx

Fume fx is an excellent way to make a 3d flame fx,but there are also other cool solutions like dpit effex plug-in for c4d,or maya fluids is also cool.

the best solution is the boris continuum complete plug in for after effects called 3d shatter,it uses the open gl accelleration to give you a really fast-to-render shatter effects which includes the basic 3d effect.it works just like to normal shatter fx but is much,much better.

The best solution is trapcode form layer with layer maps set to the source clip animated with the disperse parameter.
An easier way is the scatter effects.
