There's plenty of Sony Vegas guides in Youtube on different techniques you can view. But everything's basically the same: the importing & exporting... basically just more features than a typical video editing program.

.mp3 should work just fine in editing programs (because each audio sample has all the information needed to make the sound it's supposed to make.)
