DVD with different pixel aspect ratios?

Post by Bauzi » Tue Jun 16, 2009 1:14 pm

Hey there,

I want to make an AMV-DVD with a menu etc. Now I have a bunch of 4:3 and 16:9 movies. I thought that I will reencode them in TMPEG to MPEG2 vids with PARs for 4:3 and 16:9... well... Can a regular movie DVD have videos on it with different PARs?

I don't feel like letterboxing and I'm interrested into it :)

I know for a fact that all of my DVDs of widescreen animes have 4:3 intro/logos of the company/menus/trailers/alikes, but the source itself is widescreen, so I suppose that between different vobs there is no issue with switching AR. :)

It depends on what program you're using to make your DVD. Most decent authoring programs won't have a problem with it as long as you keep them on separate title sets (I've done it myself on several occasions), though bargain-basement, comes-with-the-drive software will sometimes choke on trying to mix ARs (they're trying to shove all of the files into one title).

If you need a decent authoring program, DVDlab is free for 30 days, which should be plenty of time to make your disk. If you decide to buy it, it'll run you $250 or $300 depending on which version you get.

DVD Flick should be able to do it, although it gets a little finicky if you want to pre-encode your files (on the upside, DVD Flick is free & open source, on the downside, it doesn't support all DVD spec resolutions and the menu system leaves something to be desired if you're wanting really advanced stuff).

I know TMPGEnc DVD Author (or Authoring Works, as it's known now) allows mixing 4:3 and anamorphic 16:9 on a single disc.
