Win7: Codec problem with VDM and VD (huffy, YV12)

Post by Bauzi » Sun Nov 01, 2009 4:07 pm

Hey there,

I have some codec issues on my fresh Windows 7 machine.

First: Why does the Virtual Dub version in the AMVApp 3 suck so much? It has a damn buggy preview. Why isn't VDM in the pack? :|

Next: Why does VD not recognize installed codecs like HuffYUV? x86 and x64 version?
I still can use Lagarith though...

Third: I installed CCCP (current version), but still get this error when I try to open my Avisynth script (DVD source) for encoding:
"couldn't locate decompressor for format yv12"

ugh... It's annoying!

Because VDM hasn't been updated in over two years (closer to three or four if you look at active development; 1.5.10.3 was just a grazing shot).

My guess for these two has to do with the Media Foundation priority issues that I've seen reported. There is a tool to adjust this so that ffdshow and what all will take priority, but I don't know what the name of it is.

The YV12 error is more than likely because A) the Helix codecs aren't installed because B) ffdshow can handle that now. But B) can run into the previous MF priority issues, or it could simply be that the CCCP doesn't make ffdshow handle raw video out of the box. You need to go into the VFW configuration and set the Raw video option to 'all supported' or 'all YUV'.

Thanks for the hint! This simple solution fixed the YV12 problems:
http://shark007.net/win7codecs.html

I still look for a solution to get my codecs into VDM and VD for exporting :|

Eh... I uninstalled Shark, because suddenly Avisynth didn't found any filter. I also had to reinstall AVS to fix this problem.

I found a good alternative to VDM in SUPER, because it provides the codecs I need.

I had absolutely none of the problems you described, using any of this stuff on Windows 7.
P.S. SUPER breaks avisynth.

SUPER is known to change your avs plugins folder, probably the same problem that you described with the "shark" thing.

Anyways, have you installed the virtualdub, huffyuv, and lagarith from the amvapp? They should all be the 32-bit versions (if you went off on your own and got a 64-bit version somewhere, that's wrong, you need to stick with the 32-bit ones.)

Installing xvid should solve any yv12 decompressor errors, but I honestly dont think you should be seeing those anyways.

,but Lagarith x64 works fine :|

After installing XviD x64 and HuffYUV from the AMVApp it works. Strange world... :|

Thank you!

A lot of video software is only 32 bit. You CANT MIX AROUND 32bit/64bit video files or codecs! So you should just stick to 32bit everything.
