So, do you think it's smarter to make my image (yes image, not planning on splicing in video since I want a goofy little screen before the amv actually starts) the same resolution I will be making my AMV (720 x 480)? Should it be bigger? If it should be bigger, is there a specific ratio/size I should use? I don't see where any of the guides would answer that question for me.

Same resolution would be best. Just keep in mind what the Pixel Aspect Ratio of your video is, so that the image will look correct once stretched over playback.
