Are you sure that it was the VFW settings? The fact it plays in WMP and not in VDub means the DirectShow component (which WMP uses) is installed and configured correctly, but that the VFW component (that VDub and AVISource use) either wasn't installed or isn't configured. Recent builds of ffdshow have FOUR configuration dialogs - Audio, DXVA, VFW, and Video. It's always advisable to use builds less than ~3 months old, IMO.

I always use clsid's generic builds, so the VFW interface is clearly labeled under 'VFW configuration' in ffdshow's Start menu folder (or the dialog that shows up if you go through VDub's Compression dialog and choose ffdshow Video Codec from the list). I don't know if the others (xxl's, or whoever else still makes regular builds) still use the older 'Video encoder configuration' terminology. If the VFW interface isn't available at all, you have to reinstall ffdshow to get it to show up.
