How To Video Encode???

Guys I am new. I watched many AMV & now I want to make AMV. But I know nothing about making AMV. I know Sony Vegus is the best soft for making AMV but I am new so I wanted to start with some simpler.SO it would be good if anyone have a suggestion.I was planing to make AMV with WMM but It only supports few format, I dont know how to encode video & I am not a big fan of reading so It would be helpful if anyone can give me a link to a tutorial video or a site where i can find useful and hopefully simple information about it.
