Intermediate codecs? Is there a mid between x264 + UT Video?

As the title says, I was wondering if there was a middle sort of codec between x264 and UT Video.

In terms of compression and editing compatability. UT Video produces files too large as I am waiting for a new HDD and I'm encoding a full series of anime to 60fps at a time.

x264 works, it's what I made my latest Touhou amv with, but obviously it's not ideal in terms of seeking speed mainly.

Anyone have any ideas?

Instead of converting entire episode, make utvideo clips in vdub with just the scenes you plan to use in the amv. That way you'll cut down on hdd space while retaining the speed benefit.

FFV1 and Lagarith both have better compression ratios than Ut. Decoding speed probably wouldn't be an issue anyway if you're on even a moderately old computer (since 'moderately old' still includes SSE2 instruction set support, as opposed to my ancient Pentium III-era editing rig), not to mention multithreading. They do take longer to encode, though, and as they're both still lossless, the files will still be large...just not quite as large.

Thanks for the input, I'll take a look. Encoding time isn't really an issue at all with this pc.
