Request for Help: Can you hear the problem in my cut?

Post by Akai Rurouni » Sun Jul 11, 2004 12:30 pm

I'm working on "Cemetary Gates" by Pantera (not normally my taste in music, but it seems to fit for what I'm doing). I needed to make a cut in the music, so I used Audacity and made the cut according to the directions in The (Beta) Guide. However I'm having trouble with the fine tuning on the cut - it still doesn't sound quite "right" to me, but I don't know what the problem is. Maybe the clips need to be closer together, or farther apart, or maybe I got the volume decay (i.e. the envelope tool) wrong, or maybe I'm just imagining the whole thing and it's actually fine.

Anyway, I was wondering if someone with a sharp ear could give it a quick listen and let me know if you can tell why the cut isn't smooth.

Here's a WAV of the cut. (~4 sec, ~800 kb)

Thanks!

The cut is between the words "cemetary" and "gates".

Basically the song was too long so I decided to end it after the second chorus. (All that follow anyway is a long solo and a few more iterations of the chorus.) The problem is that the first notes of the solo begin while "gates" is still being sung, so I couldn't cut after the word "gates". So I cut after "cemetary" and inserted the word "gates" from the end of the first chorus. It seems to work pretty well. ^_^ I just thought the cut wasn't quite smooth. How does it sound to everyone else? Can anyone really hear the cut?

It loses the beat a little, you need to retime it do the drums in the 2ns half fall when they are supposed to.

I'll give that a try. It'll be at least Thursday evening (maybe longer) before I get to work on it again, but I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the help, AD! :D

Ok, I gave it a listen and I hear what you mean in the drums, quite clearly in fact. :)

Supposed to be:
Bum Da-Dum Da-Dum Ba-Da-Dum

My cut:
Bum Da-Dum Da-D-Dum Ba-Da-Dum

So I was able to find what the drum beats look like in the WAV. (They don't exactly jump out, but they're there.) And I made another attempt... this one sounds much better to me! :D But anyone with a shaper ear, feel free to let me know if you still hear any problems.

Here's a WAV of the cut. (~4 sec, ~800 kb)

I'm going to make this last post to wrap up the thread.
I'm concluding that no news is good news ^_^ and I'm going to go with that second cut I posted as my final version.

Also, I wanted to give one more thank you to AD and downwithpants for giving my clip a listen. Thanks guys! :D
