How do I make the black frames to cover subtitles?

How do I make the black frames to cover subtitles? The ones that appear in DVDs for exmple.

i personally dont like to use subbed material unless absolutely neccesarry, though when i do, i use avi synth to crop the full screen down to widescreen and get rid of the subs before i even start saving clips to edit with using the crop(0,#,0,#) comand. a wonderful program if you dont have it go get it

Most video editing programs have an effect called "Letterbox". You can use that to coverup the subs.
Yeah ... I use a Mac ... it works and I like it.
