Live video production software for streaming video

Post by DJ_Izumi » Sat Mar 10, 2007 12:43 pm

I'm looking at doing real time video streaming for a convention.

The first goal is easy, real time streaming of the masquerade by LAN to other computers and displays in the convention for greenroom previewing and judging. This is easy, no problbem.

We're also looking at streaming other live events, concerts, contests, important panels, ect to a display in the cafe or other locations so the can be viewed by attendees elsewhere. This should also be easily done.

So... Here comes the hard part. Lower bandwidth streaming (bout 512/768kbs video, 96kbps audio in WMV) off all these events and even time shifted repeating of events/panels and anime shown in filler accessable at hotspots set up in the convention so anyone with a laptop can tune in and view them.

We can do this with VLC no problem, but I'm wondering if there's some sort of real time production software I can make use of. To do video mixing, easy real time playlist adjustment, text overlays for announcements, and stuff like that?

Real time? Uh, I'm not aware of any *software* that can do that perse. I am aware of specific *hardware* setups for use in television broadcasting that can do that sort of stuff...kinda pricey though.

It looks like we're going to go with the analogue route. Using a composite video mixer to fade and switch between cameras and video inputs and feeding the output into a capture card for streaming. Seems to be the simplest method.
