Problem loading video in editing program...
I'm having a small problem. I'm trying to make an amv with mkv files. I'm using this program called media player classic to convert them from mkv to avi (because it only takes 10 seconds). I'm trying to get these avi files to work with Sony Vegas. I'm guessing I need a certain codec but I can't find it. I have a friend who's able to get video to work, but no audio. If anyone knows the codec, or an easier method that would help out a lot.
P.S. I actually do own the anime I just can't rip it from the dvd...only from that anime too

What DVD ripper do you normally use? Occasionally, just switching to a different ripper will give you usable results. The most popular DVD ripper is DVD Decrypter, but you may also wish to try SmartRipper or DVDFab Decrypter.
If none of these work, you may have a bad DVD disc or one your drive doesn't like, then you'll probably want to do a proper conversion of the MKV video you have using VirtualDubMod. The quality is going to be lower than the DVD footage, though.
Firstly, you'll want to use an editable codec for your converted files (Huffyuv, Lagarith, Uncompressed AVI). Vegas and other editing software do not like using AVI video encoded with codecs like XviD, DivX, H.264, etc. If you are lucky, the MKV will open directly into VirtualDubMod. If not, you'll want to try opening the file via AviSynth or by extracting the video from the MKV container using MKVExtract or GraphEdit.
If you want to find out what codec a particular video file is using, I suggest examining the file with MediaInfo or GSpot.

Lies. Vegas is working with DivX perfectly, and all ya have to do is change FourCC with "Nic's FourCC changer" from XviD to DivX , and there ya go,with good editing, though quality isn't such good as Huffyuv or Lagarith, but still with vegas quality may be good enough even using DivX files.Willen wrote:Vegas and other editing software do not like using AVI video encoded with codecs like XviD, DivX, H.264, etc.

I never said that it doesn't work, but various problems may happen when using DivX/XviD files as footage (sync issues and poor image quality, among others). This is not to say that you will have these issues. It's that I don't recommend editing with lossy codec footage and I try to encourage people to use DVDs as much as possible (better quality and many available guides explaining the processes).rapture16 wrote:Lies. If DivX in Vegas works for you, great. I know it doesn't work 'perfectly' for everyone.
I just realized that in that statement I included H.264 in AVI which is an evil unto itself.

I was searching around on how to do this! Thanks! Cept I ran into a problem. I used MKVExtract on the MKV and it did indeed seperate the video. There seems to be a problem though. I cant play the file in VLC, WMP, or WMPC and VirtualDubMod doesnt reconize the file. From what I can tell after running the file in GSpot it's encoded with H.264.Willen wrote: Firstly, you'll want to use an editable codec for your converted files (Huffyuv, Lagarith, Uncompressed AVI). How do I get this file to become reconized in VDubMod so I can start converting clips to huffy?
