First of all I would advice you to read this guide. It will solve most of your problems.

Here is the way I would solve your problem:

1) Make a script in AviSynth (in best way with help of AvsP) that will help you to open your source in VirtualDub, simplest would be like this:

DirectShowSource("Path_to_your_video")
2) Convert pieces of footage that you are gonna use with VirtualDub to one of these codecs lagarith, Huffyuv, uncompressed AVI (all are for AVI container)

3) Use this clips in vegas
