Yeah, the section on Anamorphic footage sucks. You should tell people that after cropping the black parts, anything in 16:9 should be resized to some multiple of 256x144, anything in 1.85:1 should be resized to 592x320, and anything in 2.35:1 should be resized to 752x320. If one is working with a mix of footage from 1.85 and 2.35 sources, then resize both to 2.10:1, or 672x320.
Or just let me write the anamorphic section
Or just let me write the anamorphic section
Ask me about my secret stash of videos that can't be found anywhere anymore.

I was just thinking of something here. What if the guides were more modular... Currently they are broken into categories, but I think the ability to add/remove/edit/comment entries would be extremely useful.
If you check out the manuals on php.net or mysql the user comments are pretty helpful. Unfortunately it would be a problem if people used these to post questions :p. But they could be modded.
Also it would be nice if there was an automated guide suggestion system. People could write guides for certain categories. Such as the video game guide could be merged into the video guide and placed under "Getting Footage". The subtitle guide could be placed under pre-processing or even something like "Getting footage from : Fansubs / hardcoded subtitle anime"(ofcourse there would be a warning about not using fansubs if the dvds are available).
You could then slap things like the lipsynching guide under an "Adding effects" section. People could then add to it with their own effects.
Also this may help bring clarity to the guides as a user comment system directly in the guides system would allow people to point out errors in the guides easier, or maybe point out parts that need more clarity(people only see the bad, never the good, shame on them :p).
Anyways, just a thought, but I think it'd be awesome and it'd open up the guide section to alot more people since the current guide section is slow and cumbersome as well as not meshing with the rest of the site...
I believe maybe some premade phpWiki stuff could work, or maybe a custom solution :p.

Fungie you just snatched the words right out of my mouth.Fungie½ wrote:I'd personally love to see a guide on how to do high quality stuff with Windows Movie Maker. I've had to teach a few people how to do it but you can't exactly use AVS scripts in WMM. With more and more people using alternatives to Premiere, I don't think basing the guide around Premiere again is a good idea.

We can only write guides on programs we have. If someone wants to write a counterpart for other programs then that is fine.
However, the only parts of the guide that are Premiere-specific are the project settings and the export settings parts and most of the information there is useful for other editing programs too. It's not very difficult to do the equivalents for other programs, we just need the programs first.
The dvd footage use guide tells you how to make AVIs with the avs scripts, which is perfectly fine for every windows program out there. An alternative to direct avs use is being written up too (using makeavs).

There are already guides in case you didn't know. This is an update to the current guides. I don't think a whole lot will change besides some revising of text and a new layout/backend...
Go have a stab at the current ones if you can't wait :p
