no, I'm seriouis, I would definetly get one, but the 300 buck price tag or however much they want is too steep for another 80 lines or resolution. point be to a 100 buck DVD RW drive and I'm there!

so your point was not for me to get a DVD RW, it was "not to get a beta". I see... so klinky's 60 dollar VHS is ok, but the 70 buck beta is too expensive?

Case in point! I retire my arguments. Futility is not exactly my favorite pastime.
No matter what anyone says or does you will bend the facts in order to justify your means, so I say do so. Have fun. Be free young one.

no seriously, explain to me why 10 bucks more for a beta tape player that has 150 lines more of resolution, and tapes that last 20 years is too much when I could get a 60 dollar VCR with 250 lines of resolution and tapes that look like crap if they arent recorded in SP?

seriously, explain it.

oh, and I havent had to do any 'fact bending' as you like to call it. I leave the facts alone, they are working just fine the way they are.

I would probably say the main reason I would choose a VHS deck at the moment would be that I'd need to have one anyways to be able to borrow or record tapes from or for friends. If you already have a VHS that can be used for these purposes, or either don't intend to ever borrow or lend tapes to friends or only have friends with Betas (or, don't have any friends to start with), then buy whatever you want. It's your money (presumably), and I'm sure who or wherever is selling the Beta will be happy to have your money.

Also, though I'm not totally sure on my facts on this one, isn't 250 lines (assuming we're talking horizontal lines) more than NTSC TVs will display anyways? And I'd figure the Beta wouldn't have a S-VHS output (simply given the name) to output to a higher-res capable HDTV. If I'm wrong, I've learned yet another thing today

isn't a televisions total resolution 720x480? if so then I would think that you can have up to 480 horazontal lines of resolution. and I have never borrowed tapes from other people, but since beta's (or at least the old model I had those many years back) disables macro-vision, I can do more than 'borrow' the tapes.

dang catatonic you wouldn't happen to be a big black chick would you cuz I can sence the head motions...

Y don't you just get your beta, move garfeild to avi or vcd (give it to me cuz I'd like to see :D) put the thing back in your closet and not touch it for another 10 or so! (maybe more cuz I don't think you'll find anything new you need in the future, on Beta...) we'd all be better off and no, I really don't think this thread was made primarily so you could just ask if others use beta, what does it matter?? of all your arguements ppl coulda' easily came back with 'DVD's better'. And nobodys dissin Beta (well Klinky's sorta maybe) but just tryin to talk some street sence into you cuz that's what you asked for. The first post was just dripping with 'I'm getting this and will love it so poo on you! If anybody can persuade me otherwise good luck!' (if your wondering where that 2nd part came from, cuz I kinda' was... it's cuz you posted it on a forum! Y else would you post on a forum other than if you were looking for a response.)

THe response I was looking for was either a "Yes, I have and use a beta machine"
or
"No I do not have or use a beta machine, and any advice on whether or not I should get one was totaly non debatable.

And yes, DVD is better, And anything I want on DVD I will buy, but for things I see on TV I want that I cannot get on DVD I will need to record, which is why I am getting the beta.
but then again there is the whole recording things onto DVD wich is doable. btw, how much would the setup for a DVD RW cost?
