Their site is still aground, but last I read they announced they were ceasing production on the decryption software and the last version would remain available to the paying customers.

Not if you're in the US. If you're in the US (or rather, if it delivers the US version to you when you download it - people from non-US locations were reporting getting the US version too), the AACS removal functions are disabled. Regardless of whether you're using the basic HD Decrypter portion or not. The FAQ says the same thing, and then points users at other software they have to use with DVDFab just to get around AACS.

Ah, it's been a while since I used it, the last time I did I only saw the option to output an MKV. That said, that method sounds like a pain in the ass to explain to beginners, lol...

Actually, it's a lot simpler because it can be automated through batch scripting:

The only requirement is that the user should have curl, grep, and sed on the PATH. Then, if they put the script on the PATH, they can open a Command Prompt anywhere, issue the script's name, and it'll copy all the titles to the current directory. Do that setup once, and then there's a very straightforward:

1) Insert DVD.
2) Open MakeMKV and Open the disc.
3) Start the Streaming server.
4) Open a Command Prompt on a partition where there's at least 8GBs of free space (or 5GBs for a single layer disc).
5) Run the script.
6) After it's done, they'll probably want to rename the vobs to something more descriptive than title#.vob.

How sad is it that DVD is obsolete now and we still don't have any good and easy way of dealing with them. It was a mess of a format.

How close are you guys to completing the guide?

Not even begun, after all. I wouldn't hold my breath frankly. I've been doing an advanced encoding guide in Italian, elsewhere, as when I tried to write a simplified encoding guide for newcomers, I'd always end up overcomplicating things.
Frankly I think the guides in l33t's signature are the best places to go for newcomers, as it stands.
