When I load an episode into Windows Movie Maker, it tries to load the entire episode, which takes quite a long time. How come my video files don't just automatically load into the program?

Probably because it pre-renders the video so that you can conveniently edit with it and not have to wait every time you change a little thing. (That's what all the other programs do anyway and I have no reason to think it is done otherwise WMM).
On a sidenote: if you intent to make more than just one video I would seriously recommend looking at some other editing software. Pretty much anything works better and is easier to work with than WMM.
