Who makes AMVs with MAC? (Film Cut)

Post by HurQlez03 » Tue Sep 21, 2004 12:52 pm

I am in a dilemma. My old gateway laptop is wearing down and I need to get a new one. My sister says for video editing I should get a MAC, Powerbook. But I have never used MAC before, or even the video editing program Film Cut that comes with it. Is there anyone out there who knows about MAC? Is there anyone out there who use Film Cut? Please tell me if etting a MAC is a good idea and the steps on how to start making a AMV project with Film Cut. I dont want to get this Powerbook and be bummed out because I dont have the right stuff to make AMVs again.

I think your sister means "Final Cut" not "Film Cut" but yes, there are quite a few of us that makes AMVs on a Mac. There are two versions of Final Cut: Pro and Express. The Express version is a bit like iMovie on steroids. The Pro version has everything in Express but can edit different kinds of codecs as well as standard DV.

Basically, you need a DVD VOB ripper (MacTheRipper and OSex are good ones which you can get at www.macupdate.com ), a program, DiVA, to convert the VOBs to usable QuickTime based content (preferably DVCPRO if using iMovie), and butcher, edit, and remix them in Final Cut. Not that hard really.

Hope that helps.
Yeah ... I use a Mac ... it works and I like it.

Cool. Well I just ordered my MAC laptop. A 15" Powerbook G4 including 1.5 GHz PowerPC with 128MB Graphics Memory, 2GB of SDRAM main memory, 80 GB HD @ 5400 RPM, DVD/CD-RW, IPOD, virus protection, warranty, JBL speakers, and a printer. Oh yeah and the Production Suite (Final Cut Pro HD, Motion, and DVD Studio Pro 3) (over $4000). So thanks for confirming the decision to go for it.

Oh and BTW, I have a Western Digital 120GB External HD with all the vob files I ripped with DVDecryptor on my PC laptop. Do I have to re-rip all those files??

That's pretty sweet. I wish I had that. :(
/me beats 800 Mhz G4 iBook with a muddy stick

As with re-ripping the VOB files, no that's not needed. Unless you have the MPEG-2 component installed, you would have to convert the VOBs to QuickTime (using a lossless codec, like Apple Pixlet or Apple Animation). DiVA [ http://diva.3ivx.com/ ] will allow you to convert VOBs to QuickTime. By default, it uses 3ivx (which I would NOT recommend) but you can change it to another codec which might be suitable for editing.

Have fun with your new Powerbook. :)
