ok im getting a fancy videonow type thing that lets me record shows and content form my computer, tv, and other stuff (130 bucks at overstock.com) and i am wondering 2 things
1) whats a WMA?
2) is tehre a program i can use to convert music videos to MPEG(4)?

Most media players now-a-days support many types of music containers and codecs. WAV, MP3, MP2, WMA, OGG, AC3, FLAK, AAC, the list can go on. Same with vide codecs and containers. MPEG, AVI, OGM, MKV, QT, RM, I think there's a few more.
From what you're describing as the problem is, try updating your encoding codecs and upgrade to the lastest version of the media player you use. Also, when you're exporting, let your video export, and nothing else. No IMs, no solitare (I learned the hard way with this one), just exporting,

The player has codecs installed in the hardware (and I don't think you can ever update it.) Whatever the codecs are all listed in the user manual.
