Hay guyz,
I need a microphone for Greg Hecht's podcast (this is relevent, because podcast means more audio for the Greg Hecht MEP). What are your suggestions to get awesome quality audio recording, and would it be better to purchase or rent the mic in question?
I'm counting on you, Org, do not let me down... Or you will displease Greg Hecht, and you do not want that.

I would suggest look at your budget first, is you want "awesome" quality have a look at neumann, or beyerdynamic. Dont google for prices, you'll give yourself a heart attack! So lets look at this logically.
If you go for a condensor microphone then you will need +48V phantom power or look for a mic with a battery that compensate for it.
To get good results you will also require a pre-amp, most little mixing desks have this. Now if this is too complicated look at a quality dynamic microphone like Shure or Sennheiser, as previously mentioned above.
There are many other generic microphones that would do the job, Audio Techica, also does a good mike, but it all depends on what you can afford.
With a dynamic microphone you still should use a preamp, it is essencial to get a good signal to noise ratio. So possibly if your budget is low, look at the hire option.
There is also a company called behringer, they do a lot of low budget semi proffesional get that you could mabe afford.
All you would need is this mixer...

This mike or similar

And probably $30 worth of cable, all in all less then $300 US for the lot.
