Prob. with the avi clips I made in virtualdubmod
I made some clips from the Ghost in the Shell: Innocence dvd, but now I'm having problems with them. This is the 1st time I've tried doing this, and I've been trying to follow the guides by Absolute Destiny.
However, now that I have these clips, when I click on them I get an error message that says Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and must shut down. This happens even when I try to just move it without trying to open it. As soon as the file name is highlighted, then the error pops up.
I'm making the clips on a different ccomputer from the one I'll be editing on, so I need to transfer them and I was trying to do it using a flashdrive when these errors popped up. Is this a memory issue with the computer maybe? There's plenty of room left on the hard drive (over 20gigs). It has 512mg RAM, if that's at all meaningful in this situation.
Thanks for any help you have. I'm anxious to try making an amv, but I can't get past this part!

The clips are somehow corrupted and when windows tries to generate a preview the bad data is crashing explorer.exe. Try deleting the folder they're in and making the clips again.

Okay, I did that. In fact, I just deleted all of it and started over from scratch with ripping from the dvd.
So this time when I try to make clips in virtualdubmod, it only lets me make 1, then it won't play anymore. (last go round it let me make 16 clips, all of which wouldn't open) So I saved that one to look at it, and it does the same thing as before. I get the windows explorer error message.
I can't tell at what point I'm going wrong. I also don't understand why vdm won't let me make more than one clip now.

Third try. This time I deleted everything I had done before, did a disc cleanup and defrag, rebooted, and ripped a totally different dvd. Cowboy Bebop Remix vol. 6. I also tried following the directions in the guide from Vic Bond, which are slightly different.
That guide had me make a DivX file from the vob's. The guide said to use DivX 4 something, but all that was in the list on VDub was DivX 6 something. So I made an avi file on full compression mode using that. It's fine. I can look at it in Vdub, or using WMP.
Then, still following the guide, I tried to make clips using the huffyuv thing. (My head is so full of codecs and abbreviations and scripts and junk that I don't know what anything is anymore!). I made three clips and all of them crash. I get the error message that says windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to shut down as soon as I click on the file.
So is this huffyuv at fault here? What else can I use to make clips? From what I've seen around in this forum I'm not supposed to edit with the DivX one, right?

Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling virtualdubmod?
Also, you should be doing the clipping into a lossless codec like HuffYUV, and not DivX - despite what that guide says.
Oh... and have you made sure you're using an up-to-date version of DGIndex for that step between ripping and clipping?

This is a known problem sometimes. If you have ffdshow installed, tell it to decode HuffYUV and see if it still generates the error. If you don't have ffdshow installed, you can get it here:
http://x264.nl
At first the only thing you should tell it to decode is HuffYUV. I seem to remember that trying to preview stuff when it's set to decode DivX and the like sometimes causes errors, but I've never had a problem seeing HuffYUV thumbnails or using the files when ffdshow is handling them.

I was trying to make the clips from the DivX, using Huffyuv for the clips, which didn't work. I went back again last night and tried making them using Lagarith (sp?) which is labeled as lossless on the list in vdub. Those worked fine. I even went back and did the whole thing again with the GITS movie and those are fine too.
So is this Lagarith a suitable alternative for huffyuv? I'm going to be using them in Premiere Elements 3.0.
The versions of Vdub and DGindex that I'm using are from the current (as of last week) AMVapp, so I had assumed they are utd. I see ffdshow in there, but I'm not sure how to tell it to decode the huffyuv. I looked at properties in it, and found a list of codecs. Huffyuv is on there and labeled as libavcodec (as opposed to disabled).
I guess I'll try reinstalling Vdub next and see what that gets me.
BTW, thanks for all the help so far! I have a whole new appreciation for my favorite amv's now that I know some of what goes into just getting clips, much less editing them!
