Windows XP usually uses SPTI (SCSI Pass Through Interface) instead of ASPI (Advanced SCSI Programming Interface) by default. I recommend reading this: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/lof ... 19362.html

Generally, if an application requires ASPI instead of SPTI, it should install one (either Adaptec's or their own, like Nero does). The only reason I can think of why you can't use ASPI on Windows XP is because you don't have Administrator rights on the computer you are using.

This is why, on NT based systems, after an ASPI layer is installed, ASPI access is limited to users with administrator rights. Of course, Microsoft recommends using SPTI.
