Issues with DVD Decrypter

Post by Kaboom Krusader » Mon Jan 12, 2009 2:57 pm

I've been trying to rip some footage from my Remastered DragonBall GT set (brand-new release from FUNi, NTSC) for the last day or two, to contribute to an AMV project I'm working on. But DVD Decrypter keeps running into the same issue no matter which disc I'm trying to rip from. It gets a portion of the way through with the .VOB (about half if I'm lucky), before the "Read Errors" line starts doing about 20 or so "Retries," displaying this in the log over and over for each attempt:

Code: Select all

I 14:38:37 CDB Interpretation: Test Unit Ready
I 14:38:37 [1:0:0] TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L532B DE04 (D:) (ATA)
I 14:38:37 CDB: 25 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
I 14:38:37 CDB Interpretation: Read Capacity

I 14:38:37 CDB: 28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00
I 14:38:37 CDB Interpretation: Read (10) - Sector: 0
I 14:38:37 BUFFER: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

I 14:38:39 CDB: 00 00 00 00 00 00
Then eventually it gives up, and displays this message...

Code: Select all

I/O Error!
Device: [1:0:0 TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L532B DE04 (D:) (ATA)

ScsiStatus: 0x02
Interpretation: Check Condition

CDB: 28 00 00 27 77 51 00 00 01 00

Sense Area: F0 00 03 27 77 51 0A 00 00 00 00 11 00 00 00 00 00
Interpretation: Unrecovered Read Error
...With, of course, the options of Abort, Retry, Ignore. If I choose Ignore, sometimes it will go on to skip that particular file (the entire VOB) and SOMETIMES successfully rip another if I've queued it to rip more than one.

I'm having the same problem with my single release of DBZ Movie 8. THAT I got used, so if that was the only disc having this I might have chalked the problem up to being a damaged disc, since it does have a few small scratches here and there. The disc still plays perfectly fine, however. So does GT Season One. It's brand-new, I'm the only one who's handled the discs at all, and there is ZERO damage to the actual disc.

It's happening no matter which disc of GT S1 I try it on. Nothing else runs into this problem. I'm ripping my remastered Z series and movie discs, as well as my couple odd DragonBall discs, with no problem whatsoever.

So, still being a relative newb like I am, I have absolutely no idea how to interpret the problem. Is it something wrong with my drive or DVD Decrypter's settings? Is it perhaps a faultily-authored set? If so, would exchanging it for another copy serve any purpose? And kind of a long shot, has anyone else run into this problem with GT Season One?

Try AnyDVD or another DVD ripping software, since DVD Decrypter doesn't want to work.

Indeed, sometimes DVD Decrypter just straight out hates some disks. However, I want more information about these disks versus other disks (non-funi releases, non-DBZ, etc) You may just need to clean your drive. If it's handling more xomplex tasks too, like say brute force ripping of R2s, then it is likely that the program simply hates those disks.

I don't blame it. I hate DBZ too.

I've never attempted what I'm about to suggest because I've never needed to, but:

You can use ImgBurn (which is the descendant of DVD Decrypter's burning tool) to copy the discs to an image on your hard drive. Then you could try to use Daemon Tools to mount the image and see if the issue goes away when you point DVD Decrypter at the fake drive and tell it to decrypt.

You might also want to try SmartRipper - for some odd reason, it can handle some discs with newer copy obfuscation than DVD Decrypter can. I use SmartRipper by default, but it wouldn't hurt to try.

Heh, I just knew I'd get at least ONE such comment. XD

Well, thanks for the suggestions, guys; I'll keep them in mind for future projects if such a problem arises again. But with some help from an acquaintance who's also fiddled with these specific discs, I figured it out. Seems DVDDecrypter just doesn't like ripping GT's opening theme, for some reason. So rather than use file mode and grabbing the entire VOBs as I was, I just had the program pick out the specific chapters I was after. Went off without a hitch (easier on disc space too; dunno why I wasn't doing that from the get-go).

Read: The old infamous multi-angle trap, which Funimation is downright notorious for doing on their discs.

Not anymore, actually. They're doing away with multiple angles on most of their recent discs, including the remastered GT ones in question. So I don't think the problem would be stemming from that.

DVD Fab can get DVDs that DVD Decrypter can't.

I'm guessing that's largely because they're also notorious for dubbing their OP/ED songs?
