ASPI layers
ok, i'm a fresher newbie. and i'm reading Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides (ermac and absolute destiny's guide). and i have a problem. now i want to rip a dvd. it says first download DVD decrypter (i've done that). now it is saying: check if you have an ASPI layer, and if you don't go, and download one. and there is a link given: http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/downloads (which is absolutely fantastic). But i have NO idea what to do after this.
wtf is all that crap on the adapter website. i can't make head or tail of it. and i'm still no closer to finding out whether i have an ASPI layer, and if I don't, where I can download it from (yes, from the adaptec website of course, but then again, I can't make head or tail of that site).
i've searched the forum for "ASPI" but nothing useful has come up.
I would be sincerely grateful to anyone who can clear this thing up.
best wishes

Re: ASPI layers
You should already. Outdated portion of the guide is outdated.
Try running DVD Decrypter and see if it works.

hi, but i'm running windows XP, and it says in the guide that i probably won't have it installed as part of the windows package, and furthermore, i checked on wikipedia and it suggestthat the ASPI layer is not on XP because microsoft chose to run its own competitor version to the ASPI layer thing.

Re: ASPI layers
The fact that hundreds of people ask the most simple inane questions on these forums on a monthly basis combined with the fact that you can't find an instance of your question being brought up when you search should tell you something.
Have you at least tried to use DVD Decrypter, or are these problems all imagined?

Re: ASPI layers
DVD Decrypter doesn't need an ASPI layer, it defaults to using the native SPTI read mode on XP. Very old versions of DVD Decrypter did need an ASPI later, but the version distributed with the AMVApp doesn't. It runs and rips fine whether you have an ASPI layer installed or not.
