Re: Sony Vegas (Q)
I suppose it might depend on what version of Vegas you use, and the framerate of your footage
I use 8.0c, and I usually render my videos in DV NTSC, since my source is almost always 29.97 fps. I don't bother with lossy/lossless encoding anymore (I don't think I'll ever go back to Premiere), because it did nothing but drive me crazy. Artifacts and color crazyness and stuff.
If you're looking at posting stuff online, I HIGHLY suggest you render as an .avi in Vegas if you're going to slap on a dvd and share with friends, and/or get Nero Recode 2 or more recent to compress into .mp4/H.264 to distribute online.
On a rig with 8GB RAM and Windows XP-32 cranked to minimum settings, the whole render/compress process takes 30-45 minutes, max.

Re: Sony Vegas (Q)
ooh, I'm sorry. I thought you were asking what to render it as, instead of what your source should be.
Vegas won't read RMVB's. You'll need to pick up Real Alternative in addition to VirtualDubMod and AVIsynth.
Make an AVIsynth script (use Notepad, see here for help) with these 2 lines...
Save it as RMVB2397.avst in VirtualDubMod's template folder. Then, make another script with these 2 lines...
Save that one as RMVB2997.avst in VirtualDubMod's template folder.
Then, open VirtualDubMod, and open your footage with whatever template matches the actual framerate of your footage (the closest, the best) at the bottom of the file browser. Cut and trim, or add any other scripts, and then save as either uncompressed .avi (best option if you have the room, the files are BIG), or as an XviD MPEG4 (can cause problems in Vegas, only use in extreme cases).
Come back if you need more help.

Re: Sony Vegas (Q)
Real Alternative and the AVIsynth scripts are so VirtualDubMod will read RVBM's, and you can put them in Vegas.
