Compression - Last brick wall

My goal is to get a 6 minute amv(using 720x480) to a small size with high quaity for distribution on the internet. So I've used VicBond007's guide for dvd footage and am happily working on a music video(adobe premiere pro). I decided to tackle the compression before I finish the video, because i've had problems with it in the past. I've exported a small segment so as to do multiple conversions and compressions to compare the files' quality and size. I was trying to figure this out on my own, and i have come pretty far with guides and such. I've done mpg and mpg2 using TMPGEnc and mp4 using zarx264gui. Both the mpg and mpg2 had decent file size, but poor quality. Any amatuer attempts to raise quality resulted in a bloated file size. The mp4 was extremely small and very good looking, however would not play on my Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic(i read that ffdshow would allow them to, but, alas, it does not kick on for it). Quicktime WILL play it, but only half-assedly. Once it gets to a heavily edited spot with multiple transitions the player actually lags terribly. Basically unviewable.

The avs file for the mp4 encoding contains this:
AVISource("f:\media\video\rnr project.avi")
ConvertToYV12(interlaced=false)

I'm not sure if i need any more or less. The setting on the gui were left on default.

I wish there was some magical fix, but i know there isnt. I'm not asking for one, but a little help would be appreciated. If there's anymore info you need, lmk. Thanks.

It seems like you did everything correctly. Your results sound typical. Good quality mpeg2 is very big and mp4 h264 encodes are small and require correct configuration of your ffdshow/etc. (or simply using VLC). These are gives that you need to work around.

Would it be wise to have 3 different versions for download? Does amv allow multiple uploads like that? It's been quite a while since the last time I uploaded.

Pretty sure you get one local upload, but can have as many direct links as you want. So basically upload one version on local (I think probably the .mp4, unless you do an Xvid in which that would be an option as well) and then upload the other versions somewhere else (your own hosting or a place like http://www.megaupload.com/) and direct link them (or in the case of megaupload and others that require you to click something else before the download starts, indirect link)

It's probably lagging because of your processor speed, not anything in the video itself. Are you on an old/er computer? :|
