Post by Vo!D » Thu Jan 17, 2008 6:40 am

I been tought to convert MKV file to AVI file using virtuadub the problem now is that there are no sound. How do I include the sound?

Also the last problem about my convertion is that the file output is rather large.

in a nut shell

MKV -> AVI

No loss of quality
much smaller filesize
the sound is included

Thanks

Try using MVK EXTRACT GUI.

What is the audio codec used in your mkv? If it is aac or ac3, vdub will not understand it. So you sould use mkv extract gui to extract the audio, convert it to mp3 (yeah, there will be a loss in quality)

After that, use vdubmod to desactivate the original soundtrack and place the new one for your avi.

those two things are contradictory, if you want to preserve quality...you're gonna have to eat the large filesize

instead of converting the audio to .mp3, you could make it (or leave it, I haven't used mkv extract gui) .wav

Cant seem to find the audio codec used from the mkv but theres an icon that is showing from the bottom right part of the screen named Haali Media Splitter. If I show the video theres no option that will let me see the current audio codec.

Thanks guys for the help

But ive seen videos whose quality is still high grade but it was so small and in avi format.

May I ask your purpose?

I mean it's possible that they stuck x264 into .avi in order to get the filesize down without as much loss of quality, but recompression always means there's some loss of data.

you just drag and drop your file into vdubmod's window
AFAIK, you'll need virtualdubmod (not virtualdub) as it has built-in support for .mkv

then go to video, compression and select your codec (lossless is best if you plan to edit)
then file, save.
