Large file size, not compressing right (?)

Hmm. I'm going back through the guides again, and that may have been the wrong use of terminology on my end.
Looking back on it, I realized I did this:
LanczosResize(960,480)
Crop(120,0,-120,0)
Which makes it 4:3 DAR but leaves it at 0.9PAR. I was editing at 0.9 PAR in my project settings. And I exported at 1.0 square pixels (I'm assuming Premiere makes the conversion for me). So maybe it's all good?
I'm starting a fresh video and maybe this will make more sense after I've done a video the "right way" vs this back-end way I've approached it. Thanks for your input.
It would have been cool to offer this one up for some constructive critique, just to get a feel for other things I've done right or wrong, but it's probably not worth it if the main response will just be that my aspect ratio is off.
On that note, can I ask you a question? Considering this board seems to be populated by mostly men, do you think I could get by with posting my "Flaunt It" video about the men of FFVII and still get any decent feedback? Or would it simply end up with the guys rolling their eyes and saying 'puh-lease'. :P

And that doesn't just result in an extremely stretched and cropped video?dreamcatcherr wrote:Looking back on it, I realized I did this:

I've never done it this way, so i don't know. But, i'd be afraid that it would simply change the PAR of the video to 1.0 and keep it at 720x480 - which would be wrong.dreamcatcherr wrote:I was editing at 0.9 PAR in my project settings. I know plenty of female editors - The ratio isn't that skewed. I'm sure there are plenty of female viewers here as well, but since they're all rather anonymous, it's hard to tell.dreamcatcherr wrote:On that note, can I ask you a question? It didn't result in a stretched video because the settings for my premiere project were (720X480) 4:3. (Remember, I came at this bass-ackwards.)
I appreciate all your help. This has been a great learning experience.

Ya know, I think you may be right on that. I'll re-export at 0.9. I'll just need to resize - after export - to (640, 480) to make it a 1.0 PAR, correct? (I do declare, it might be salvagable after all.)I've never done it this way, so i don't know. Just because the end result is the correct size doesn't mean everything on screen doesn't look 100 lbs heavier. If you stretch an image and crop like that, you loose the stuff on the side and everything in the middle is stretched out.dreamcatcherr wrote:It didn't result in a stretched video because the settings for my premiere project were (720X480) 4:3. Use my avatar image as an example. You scaled by 33.33% horizontally and then trimmed. The resulting image will look very off:

It was originally a vob from a 16:9 DVD. I used this guide to make it 4:3 yet still remain at DVD resolution:
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ ... tios2.html
I then exported my final movie at 0.9 PAR and resized it to 640X480 (to make it 1.0 PAR) and I think it's looking better now, though I went a round-about way to get there. By george, I think she's got it?

Which lined up with what I had for my original project settings. (720X480) 4:3 - 0.9 PARMaking all the Sources 4:3
In order to make all the sources 4:3 you will need to resize your 16:9 footage to have the same PAR as the 4:3 stuff and then crop off the left and right hand side of your footage. The PAR will either be the regular DVD footage PAR or square pixels, depending on your preference. See the 4:3 section above for more info.
Output NTSC Footage at DVD Resolution:
LanczosResize(960,480)
Crop(120,0,-120,-0)

Not a problem at all!
Now that I understand things better, I could have done this project keeping all my widescreen glory but I'm not going back, no way, no how. I'll take what I've got and be happy about it because, oof, what a long, hard haul.
But hot damn, it feels good to finally nail this. This thread was a fantastic help.
