is compressing to a 70G avi normal?

Post by batmanMG » Fri Jan 26, 2007 3:41 am

ok so last time i compressed my footage with huffyuv through virtualdub and got a 30 gig avi file... this time i try and do the same thing (i really don't know what i did last time) and follow A&E's guide and when i go to save it... 1/10th way through its up to 17 Gs and estimated to be 70.... WTF!!!!! any typical mistakes that would cuase this? I know i must be missing a step but i've re read the guides like a billion times and am getting nowhere... TY

You can't make a mistake, but the size of a HuffYUV depends on so much things: Length of the source, resolution, the source itself. And it depends on the colorspace in which you store it. Thte size are RGB > YUY2 > YV12 (the latter only available via the ffmpeg interface). So maybe this time you are using RGB, following A&E's guide, while you last time didn't do RGB conversion and that way stored it in YV12 (which would be around half the size)?

at 70 gigs, i'm almost certain you just forgot to compress.

video>compression. then you have your choice between lagarith and huffy

nope didn't forget to compress... the file size estimate was given durring a huffyuv compression

ok so maybe this will help... i got the vobs from A place promised in our early days DVD... DGIndex-ed them... and then used this script in virtualdubmod

mpeg2source("c:\blah blah blah\PLACE_PROMISED_IN_OUR_EARLY_DAYS\Place Promised.d2v")
KernelDeint(order=1, threshold=2)
LanczosResize(848,480)

and from there i file save (compressor huffyuv leaving the settings alone) and got a HUGE stone in my a**

do i need to convert it to yuy2 or yv12 ? becuase i don't know wich of the three it is already...

hellfire what you say sounds right... becuase half the size would fit the profile... but i didn't do anything with the colorspace... just left it as is... (im avisynth illiterate >,<) so is it possible that the footage was already in RGB and i now need to convert it to YV12?

oh yes does it matter when converting what it is originaly... or will the conversion work no matter what...

oh yes... and which one gets the half size... but keeps the quality and compatability... im using adobe premiere elements (me = poor) so the choices are a bit more limited im guessing...

^^^^^^ that last one can probably be ignored...

i had something else but i forget it now...

TY SOOOOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND HELP!!!!!!!

now i remember... does changing the colorspace cut the size in half automaticaly or is it only in combination with the compression... because im pretty sure (not absolutely) that i might have used uncompressed footage cuz premeire elements has issues with huffyuv... that or thats what i did with my flcl footage

im going to guess that i did compress it... try it that way if i get problemes then insert pen into ear...

again ty for the help guys... your lifesavers mmmm i haven't had a lifesaver in forever i gotta get some

Your footage should already be in YV12.

In matter of compatibility YUY2 is the worst you can have.

And I forgot, one mistake you can make. It is only kept in YV12 (Assuming you have the HuffYUV version that can use YV12) if "fast recompress" is chosen as method. With "Normal recompress" and "full processing mode" VDM will perform a RGB conversion.

Go with Lagarith - the files are smaller than HuffYUV with no difference in quality. And are you trying to compress the whole movie into one .avi file, or are you taking just the portions you need for your clips (which you should be doing)?

TY hellfire... i was using full processing and normal recompress i believe... so hopefully that was the mistake i overlooked...

and crackthesky (nice name) im using nearly the entire movie... there aren't many sections of it i haven't diced up to bits and peices... (sounds a bit much but hopefully it works... ) and for the amount of space it would save i figured it would be more trouble than its worth...

plus when i first started this project 2 years ago i used the whole thing, and after reformatting the only thing i could save to disc was the project and not the footage... so i need to get back an exact duplicate... (if nothing with huffyuv works i'll end up switching to lagarith
