better than xvid??

Post by lister007 » Mon May 21, 2007 6:27 am

Basically I want to know what people will and will not play, we had a disscussion a while back about VP6 and I was wondering If I encoded my new project to that would people be able to play it? Or a similar mp4 to xvid?

Encoding to xvid in vdubmod is cool and everything but its not what I usually do for my own use, usually I will use some type of flash to "preivew" stuff (just because I can que up a bunch of clips, have then all small, play through a hefty amount at once and delete the ones I don't want) (or just view the lossless depending on what I'm doing) and use a mpeg 2 (one pass) with a data rate of around 7800kps depending on the project to view stuff on dvd. For storage on a hardrive I would would use sorensen mpeg4 pro (or the apple AVC equivalent). The problem is that I tried to use G spot to see what codecs some of these files will use (like if you click on an xivd it comes up with five or six dirrent codecs that use it) and some of them its not even "seeing" so I'm thinking if Gspot can't see them, then people (well most, some of you guys know your stuff) aren't gonna be able to play them.

At the end of the day what is the best compression to use doya think? If xvid then great! but if I can use soreson squeeze to get a better compression that everyone can play then thats even better. :P

Xvid is better for distro but only because *most* people will have some kind of divx codec on their computer...

although you will still get the "video corrupt" and "i couldnt see the video" and my ever favorite "YOU JUST UPLOADED THE SONG!!! IM GOING TO TELL THE MODS ON YOU" quick comments when using XVID, but those come from people who dont know anything about compression and codecs (ah! i remember those days)

if you really want something universally useable render in mpeg 1 or 2 - cause just about EVERYONE should be able to play those O.o really super low quality though O.o

just so you know though as far as quality terms go he is correct here... currently it has the best filesize to quality ratio..

I agree but have not seen an incredible amount of use of that on the org, again comes back to distro. Was thinking of using main concept if I was to encode with that as MEGUI doesn't seem to be working for me anymore....want to add wht your currently using for your encodes to x264,h264,

i encode via zarxgui.
i really don't care if some people don't see my video because of the codec. anyone worth having as an audience already has h.264.

the anti mp4 list is short these days anyways. it's pretty much just cornwiggle.

to me zarxgui is the the easy way to convert it to a mp4 but i am not sure about x264 i did not see that option on the zarxgui but still theuse of using x264 and mp4 is growing so it will take a awhile
