How do I convert footage with DiVX encoding into a regular AVI file that I can edit in Adobe Premiere?
This is probably a dumb question, or something that I was too stupid to figure out from the guides but alas, I am not as tech savvy as I would like to be
If someone would be kind enough to help me out I would be really grateful.

avi isn't a format. Your divx file is most likely in a .avi container.
for editing, a lossless codec is best (huffyuv or lagarith)
you can re-encode using virtualdub or virtualdubmod.
you'll want to do your clipping in vdub/mod, since lossless = big filesize

then go to file->save
use those to mark the beginning and the end of the "clips" you want so you can save room
