Problems with an external hdd...

Post by Altrouge » Sat Jun 28, 2008 11:51 pm

Well, I've had my external hard drive for a while now, but all of a sudden it decided to die on me. Every time I connect it to my computer, opening My Computer freezes that screen, meaning I have no way to access the drive. But right when I unplug it, everything continues as normal.

I've tried this on multiple computers, which leads me to believe that the problem lies with the hard drive itself. It's been working perfectly fine up until now, and no matter how many times I connect and disconnect it, nothing's working.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, would you mind telling me how to fix this little problem? It'd suck if I couldn't fix this, since all of my sources are on there...XD

Just for reference, it's a 250GB Western Digital HDD.

Out of curiosity, does it make any odd clicking sounds? Clicking is always a bad sign that failure is imminent.

Well, if no one else comes in with an actual way to fix it, you could always try taking the HDD out of the external enclosure and connecting it directly to an open port on your motherboard. Check the warranty on the HDD though; opening the enclosure may void the warranty.

That's just a last resort, though.
... yea ...

Hmm, no clicking sounds that I can hear...

Heh, I have absolutely no experience in handling electronic devices in that sort of matter, so attempting to do that for me is suicide XD

In any case, thanks for your help. I'll see what I can do with this thing.
