SLIing 9700's. Fun time for all, or the definitive overkill?

Post by Mr Pilkington » Tue Jan 28, 2003 1:12 am

I want to SLI two Radeon 9700's but dual (8x) AGP is out of the question. Have they yet made a 9700 that run on the 3GI/O interface (aka: PCI express)? I can't find any on Pricewatch or Newegg! I just need to know if said equipment exists.

No.

That is a stupid idea...

Even if they did have a PCI-X Radeon, what motherboard are you going to run it on? And are you going to go re-engineer ATIs hardware/drivers to support SLI?

Ha, I doubt it

First off I didn't say "PCI-X" I said PCI Express, vast difference. Besides X wouldn’t be able to keep up with a 9700. It's hardly more powerful than standard PCI 1.1, it's merely 64 architecture built upon a similar premise.

Second:
what motherboard are you going to run it on
Which ever one I desire. It's not a problem of having the slot, it's a matter of finding the proper card. I had heard unsubstantiated rumor of ATI releasing a PCI Express version of their 7000-9700 series cards some time this summer. They would be fools not to. And as far ass the SLIing portion of that retort, Let me worry about how it going to be done. It was a challenge set upon me, and one I am more than willing to rise to meet.

Well, apart from the obvoius fact that SLI has been pretty much dead since the V2, we are at PCI 2.2 spec currently but that is just a nitpick. What is funny is that even two 9700pro would draw less power then a Geforce FX...

Thank god the 9700pro is better than the FX so I don't have to make any hard decisions :)

yeah, but have you seen that fan on the FX? It looks like it came out of your crazy FLCL-Shameless Rock AMV :-) You might have invented the Premiere
Whammy Bar, but NVidia just invented a rear exhaust (car type) to a graphics card. This thing is sooo butt-ugly...

And that's all that's needed more noisy turbo fans in your PC. Time to come up with a fanless video card running in a fanless system.

Think about it this way, if you turn your system on and the computer starts to move forward, then you know things have gone way too far....
