New DVD drive

I just purchased a new DVD drive, I followed all of the instructions into placing it into the computer, I took out my old CD-rom drive that wasn't responding and replaced it with the DVD drive. It's a plug and play, but it doesn't work, Windows doesn't read it, and what's worse, windows doesn't seem to recognize my CD-RW drive now either. Oh, just in case you what to know it's a Pacific Digital.

Does the drive have an icon when you open My Computer? Are both drives on the same IDE channel (i.e. cable)? Are the IDE connectors firmly in place on the drives and mainboard controller?

neither drives have an icon in My Computer. I', using a Compaq computer, which means both are on the same IDE cable. The drive came with an IDE cable, is it smart to replace the cable that came with the computer for the new one?

Sounds to me like you may have your master/slave setings wrong. Check those and see what you get.

It's quite possible you have both set to master or slave.

There should be instructions that came with your DVD drive, or at least a sticker on the drive itself that explains how to set it to master (MA) or slave (SL).

Figure out what it is now, then switch the DVD to the other position.

If that doesn't work, you could take out the CDRW, and if it has a sticker on it explaining the positions, you could try setting both devices to the Cable Select setting (CS). Don't try this until you've tried changing the setting on the DVD first.

*if you're using windows 2000, be sure to go into Device Manager, select your second IDE channel, choose Properties, and under advanced, select "Use DMA if Available"

yeah, the master/slave settings were wrong, it was such a tiny piece that it blended in and I overlooked it, thanks for your help. ^^
