Hi. I'd like to list what I have on my computer, and I am asking if anyone would be helpful and tell me what I would need to get to make AMVs.
Processor: P4 1.8GH
RAM: 512MB
Display: NVidia GeForce2 mx40 (64MB)
CD Drive: HL-DT-ST CD-ROM GCR 8480B
Soundmax
I know I need a burner, but is the hardware currently on my computer enough to get started? Do I need any particular programs to get started?
Do I need to upgrade anything?

No, you do NOT need a burner. A DVD-ROM drive will work just fine for ripping DVDs.
One thing video editing takes a lot of is hard drive space -- all those source clips can eat up a drive fast. (A 26-episode series ripped straight from DVDs usually takes over 20 GB.)
As for programs, I highly recommend the software found on <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ ... html">this page</a>, including ErMaC and AbsoluteDestiny's <a href="/guides/avtechbeta/amvapp.html">AMVapp</a>.
And then you'll need an editing program. Check <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/v ... 4257">this sticky thread</a> for suggestions in most different price ranges.

nagash, don't take this to mean 'I need the fastest harddrive known to man.' 10,000rpm drives and higher are prohibitively expensive and don't have much storage space. You'll do fine with high-capacity 7200rpm drives, I prefer Western Digital or Seagate.post-it wrote:. hmmm . . a fairly fast Hard-drive would come in handy.
everything else seems to be quite good

Yes double your ram and pick up a 7200RPM HD or if your board has SATA get two SATA's much faster and you don't have to pay the new cost price tag, let me know I will find you two on the forums. Also I would say get yoursel a video card that is direct x 8 capable atleast, that card you have is not. If you can direct x 9. If you like nVidia get a 5700FX or above and get something with 128MB if you like AT a 9600 would be good enough.
Lets see....
Other then that your good, if your Motherboard supports it another upgrade would be to get a Pentium 4 that has HT (hyper threading) works really well with most video applications to speed things up for you. But then again thats just an idea.
