HUGE OS PROBLEM! MORE HUGE THAN JESUS!

Post by Akashio » Fri Mar 03, 2006 5:47 pm

Ok, I have a huge problem.

Context: I have two partitions: one running Windows Pro x64 and another running Windows XP Home (32-bit). The former is used for everything from iTunes to After Effects, while the latter is used solely for programs that can only be run on 32-bit platforms like many games.

The Problem: Recently, I used System Repair Mechanic to speed up my computer and fix my x64 registry. This ended up making it so that upon booting the x64 partition, it would freeze on the logo screen. There was no way to get into that OS... So then i put in my x64 CD and tried the ol' repair process and upon reinstalling the crucial files, it froze and I was forced to power down. From that moment on, not only does the OS just show a black screen, but now when my x64 CD searches for "previous installations," it freezes and doesn't recognize any installation.

WTF am I supposed to do? I've tried rewriting my mbr with FDISK and I've tried rebuilding bootcfg with the recovery console. I have no backup disks, so what am I supposed to do? PLEASE HELP ME!

for what you said, you probably know more about this than I do, but at this point any help is good help right?

if all else fails, you could wipe the drive with XP-64 on it... but somehow I think that you have data that you really want intact.
if you have a little money, you could get another HD or an external HD
you could save a little money by getting these on ebay (but it does come with a risk, as a side note I got 2 WD raptors [36GB] for about $75 each)

either way, you should be able to transfer all the files you want to preserve and then install x-64 on the new drive

If you can boot into xp home you might be able to move any files you want to save frome the x64 partition to the home partition. Then you could format the x64 partition and reinstall your os and software.

You might have been better off to boot into safe mode and use system restore before using the repair process.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

Do you have multiple CD drives? Preferably a burner and one that isn't?

If so, you might be able to use a Linux LiveCD like Knoppix to burn your data off

Yes that's exactly the setup I have. Now what exactly do you mean?

Well, use a second computer to burn a LiveCD that contains a CD burning program. Boot this CD from the non-burned drive. Put a blank CD-R in the burner. Burn the data you need to the blank.

Check out knoppix.org , they have a linux os and software that run directly from a cd, no installation. It is a 700meg download and you must burn it to a cd as an iso, if you burn it as a data disc it doesn't work. Follow their directions. Knoppix can read windows files so you can save them to another drive, a cd or second hard drive work well.

I don't think System Repair Mechanic is designed for use with WinXP Pro 64-bit. Probably why it mucked it up. Have you tried to replace the modified x64 registry with a known good older backup?

You could always buy a Mac.
