AMD is the way to go! Use a 2800+ XP get the MSI board and get what ever else you need. The Pentium chips are overrated... They're based on speed and not performance as the AMD chips are!
XP
Great bang for your buck.
Does the same as the P4 and cheaper.
Performance!!
Runs applications as they need to run.
Overclock friendly!
P4
Bang you for your bucks. (cha-ching)
Does the same as the XP and more money in their pockets. (cha-ching)
More Speed!! (cha-ching)
Runs everything just like an XP. (cha-ching)
Overclock.. You need top of the line water cooling if you want to overclock us!! (cha-ching)
I'd wait a few more months after the 64 has been on the market.. AMD will start pushing for that processor and the XPs will drop in price!
The ultimate choice is up to you...

From what i have read in articals on the web/magazines... Amd runs hotter then intel. i don't know about their newer cpus but older amd cpus would litteraly fry themselfs and the motherboard (and an egg too) if you took the heatsinc/fan off of it (from toms hardware guide, but it was old article). My p4 (2.8ghz), with just the standard heatsinc/fan and a case fan runs at 38-42 C.
