Help with using a PS2 for video ripping.

Post by TennyoKitsune » Tue Aug 19, 2003 10:53 am

My computer sucks, I'll leave it at that. In order to read DVD style CDs on my computer I have to take it apart, install the DVD-ROM, and run the program, but there's another problem with that. When I do do that, my computer can't recognize my D: Hard Drive, the HD I use to store my video footage for my AMVs. So unless I can afford a DVD-RW/CD-RW drive (I.e. a burner that can also read DVDs) I'm stuck between a rock and a hardplace. So my question is this.

Is there a way for me to connect my PS2 to my computer, (through use of maybe even a Game Shark package or something) so that I can use it to pull the DVD files from my Anime (Hong Kong Subbed) DVDs onto my computer HD so that I can -somehow- edit them to work on my current projects?

If none of this makes sense let me know X_X I really really want to work on my videos, but unless I have the DVD-ROM and D: HD recognized I'm screwed.

Better yet, can someone tell me if it would be ok just to change out my computer's OLD tower for a new one that will allow me to install the burner AND the DVD rom?

At current my computer's tower has only 1 CD-ROM drive open to be used, it has space for a zip drive near the 1 USB port, the 1.4 A Drive.. oh why am I even explaining it?

My question is, would it solve my problem if I just bought a bigger tower and moved all my computer components to it? Motherboard and all I mean. I'm tired of having to take my computer apart to install the DVD burner so it can recognize my Secondary HD and my DVD rom at the same time X_X

Sometimes it may be costly, but try an external DVD-rom (USb Port in the back/front of your computer) or something.

Changing the tower wont help anything if the problem is a resource conflict.

Make sure that all of your IDE devices are jumpered for auto detection, or if that isn't an option make sure the device at the end of the ribbon cable is set to master, and that the one in the middle is set to slave. If you have the option put both HD's onto one IDE ribbon and then let your DVD-rom have it's own.

The best you might be able to do with your PS2 is find one of those Linux distributions that will boot from PS2 make sure it has a Linux DVD Ripper, Samba, and support for the PS2 network adapter, then telnet to the PS2, mount your local HD via Samba, tell it to rip with the samba share point as it's destination, and voila.

Actually, for 50 bucks I got a new tower for the old computer, put the entire computer together (it took me about five or six hours) and got it up and running no problem. (except the power button is now 'reset' ^^;;;;;;

The power supply's fan is larger and can cool my MB a lot faster than what it was originally in. So now I have both HDs recognized as well as both the CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives, the only thing I need are the drivers for the DVD-ROM and my footage snaggers and I'll be in business.

But thanks for letting me know Seph. I was actually considering it until I found a cheap tower.

Changing the tower DID help. It gave me actual ROOM to add in the secondary drive. I only had ONE bay open for a DVD/CD-ROM drive, I needed two. So I bought a new tower with 2 extra bays for my HDs and my CD-RW and DVD-ROM, there wasn't anything wrong with the INTERNAL structure of the computer itself. The computer, it's components (etc) were -fine-. It's just that I couldn't have BOTH my DVD and CD-RW drives in at the same time in the old one. Hence why I asked if it would be best if I just got a new one that would accomidate the two drives.

I guess I wasn't very clear on when I said it the first time.

You are correct, but I'm glad you got it working with the extra room. I still think my PS2 ripping idea would work in a tight fix though. Wouldn't be pretty, but it'd work.

If and when I can afford it I'll do that in case of emergencies. But given that my computer seems to be quite content with the new settings o-O I think I'll be ok. But thanks for the info ^^;
