I just bought a new LCD monitor:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824176079
Not from newegg but that exact monitor. It's res is 1680x1050, is that odd? Cuz it seems all widescreen videos have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.
It seems all 22" have this res as their max so why would don't widescreen videos fit them?
is 16:10 ratio odd for a monitor?

Not odd. In fact, this is the most common aspect ratio for widescreen computer LCD monitors.
Since they are 16:10, when playing 16:9 (1.78:1) video thin black bars will be present at the top and bottom of the screen. This is normal unless you can set your video drivers to stretch the video vertically to fill the screen (I'm not advocating the use of this technique, just putting it out for info).
BTW, non-widescreen 17+" LCD monitors are usually 5:4 aspect ratio instead of a SD TV's 4:3 AR with a 1280x1024 resolution. Because of this, my 19" LCDs have thin black bars top and bottom of the screen when playing back 4:3 material and slightly bigger bars when playing 16:9 material compared to an older CRT-based monitor.

.. don't feel too bad about it being 16:10 as a monitor; could you imagine how confused you'd be if you just bought a 52" HDTV Screen and it didn't have those 16:10 black-out lines above and below the pictures when your in Auto-Aspect-Ratio-Mode T_T
.. my other TV has a 17:8 screen; the left and right are black on that one T_T
.. just wait for a while and someone will make Monitors and TV's with the correct screen dimensions. by february 2009 I'll be curious which TV Tuner they will be calling "standard" ... ATSC? ACS? Fox? ABC? UBSR? seens no one is too concerned about that sorta thing today!

Well for game development that seems like it would be easy, wouldn't they just have to widen the camera view and have it rap which? but for videos it doesn't seem like there would be much use for it at this time. Though to get the actually effect of this it would have to be huge and with just the cost of the size to have it built like that would cost quite a bit I would think . But yeah I would love to see that to .
