Just loop the line out on your computer to the mic inout and use sound recorder or any other audio editing software.

i dont get what ya mean by recording properties. do ya mean the sound recorder that comes with windows ? (which doesnt appear to have such an option, im using winxp pro sp1 ) or does audacity have such an option in itself ?

Since we're on the topic of capturing audio, does anybody know if it's possible to drop "frames" of audio if the capture is done on a slow computer? Slow as in a ~400mhz cpu.

Used to capture 8-bit audio with a Tandy 286 box, and it sounded okay. So I'm guessing a modern machine shouldn't have any trouble with 16-bit audio.

Go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Voulme control

Next click the options menu and select Properties.

Select Recording and in the box below that says "Show the following Volume controls" make sure the box that says "What U Hear" is selected. (If you don't have that option then you can't do this method)

Click ok and now you should be back to the volume controls. One of the sliders should be for What U Hear. Select the box under it to enable recording with it.

Now open Audacity or any other program that can record audio and hit record. In another program play the file whose audio you want to record. When it is done playing you can stop playback and then stop the recording process. Audacity will now display the waveform of the file's audio. Here you can remove the silence from the ends if you want. Then in the File menu select "Export as WAV". Choose where to save the file and after it is done exporting you now have the audio.
