Capturing Cards
My school has two in there PC's for MV making, and I was wondering if any of you know where to get one of these nifty cards and how much they are. Also, is there a cord required? (well duh, or course there is) and if so, what kind of cord?

Man, I would buy a card for school computers because the IT people are touchy about letting students put crap in. If their designed for making movies, then uhh they should have a card in there already or some way of hooking a camera or video source.
There are a couple of ways to get source, the best and easiest if you ask me is ripping DVDs and getting the source that way, there is a guide on a-m-v.org on how to do this(click on the link in my sig).
As for capture cards. You would want something that accepts component cables or s-video cables. :p You can get them for pretty cheap online, check out price watch.,
There are also DV cards out there too. I don't use a capture card so i am probably not the best source.
You may want to search forums for capture card and see what comes up as well ;p

Re: Capturing Cards
those cards are probly for some video editing class, not for MVs ;-p... less, of coarse, like kliky said, the IT peeps let somebody mess with the schools equipment. Not sure how it is up there in Canada but no way in hell your doin that down here...Chichiri_no_Miko wrote:My school has two in there PC's for MV making, and I was wondering if any of you know where to get one of these nifty cards and how much they are. anyway you can get a capture card from just about any store that sells computers (littler ones aren't likely to have them, but they may be able to order you one if they deal with that company already). The 'ghetto' ones (non-dv, internal) run from $20 (usually comes without tv tuning capabilitys) to ~60 (comes with TV ;-p but it's still dependant on your processor) US dinero to about 1 Benjamin, 100 us dolla. There's also those external usb ones, I don't suggest them if you expect to capture footage (they're good for tv watching though!). Than the price skyrockets into like 300US for DV cards. Sorta' worth it though as you usually get a free copy of Premeire ;-p. I don't know to much about DV cards but you can check the hardware faqs on the main page under guides if your interested.
But what I think your looking to do is just rip an episode/ series from a DVD or two. For this, all you need is a DVD drive and said DVDs plus a program that will do it. However I doubt the school has dvd drives as that would serve little purpose to educate... again it might be a Canadian thing -_- (yeah, Canadian jokes wherever I can -_-). DVD drives shouldn't cost much more than 20 us bucks though and their much more common than capture cards. If you only have VHS or your HARDCORE and got Laserdiscs or you wanna capture your l33t Jigglypuff b3471ng on P1cH005 455 than yeah, you need a capture card and a chord to link the VCR, LD player, Gamecube, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox whatever. you can also get your own external DVD player, you'll need to use a cable for this too (Probly 1 S-Video cable will take care of all these dutys).
1 more problem you might have, and the biggest reason I highly doubt this capture card is for public (ppl not in the AV class/ Anime club) use. is that encoding (capturing AND making a file on that computer) takes alot of power. Too much power for 1 silly little iMac (cuz that's what the school probly has ;-p). I'd just enquire about an AV class and Anime club, that would give you more rights to like, stay after school and stuff... that'd be cool ay?? (just had to do that ;-p ROTFLMAO)
(I'm normally not this nice but to a fellow ANC fan ;-p)

When I went to HighSchool, we owned a channel called Channel 20, was more than just a class, you did a lot of news, held a lot of conventions, taped a lot of crap for the community, or neone else
was also the first to go LIVE in the state
woohoo
at ne rate, we had capture cards for taking the crap and editing them on premiere, then we'd send to a DVD maker or tape to sell them
i wouldnt recommend getting a card for that crap
