Specific Questions for ripping dvds that are Not Copyrighted

Post by Mysticalfan » Mon Jan 14, 2008 4:22 pm

I have a dvd that I just transferred from a VHS I had so it's not copyrighted.
I want to rip it onto my PC and I've never done this before.

There's a tutorial here on the AMV site, but I don't know if it's outdated because it seems DVD Decrypter is no longer available for download.
I'm wondering if there is anything I should know before following this tutorial from AMV on Ripping DVD Footage. Like software updates or a better guide?
I guess I'll use SmartRipper instead.

Also, I have Windows XP and I have Nero (5.0 or 6.0) so can I use Nero instead for this? How can I use Nero for this?

Or should I stick with the AMV tutorial for Ripping footage (here's the link http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ ... ogetb.html )

Thank You.

There's nothing problematic with using SmartRipper - that's my main ripper, has been for years. The only problems that may arise are if the disc has certain types of encryption or 'protection' on it that SmartRipper is too old to handle. These would mainly be ARccOS and the like, which tend to be more in the realm of Hollywood DVDs, not anime.

And the last version of DVD Decrypter is included in the AMVapp 3.0 beta:

As Decryptor comes in amvapp, you should be fine.

You do not need to deviate from the established method of pre-production as explained in the guides.

Ripping programs are used to defeat copy protection.
If you created the DVD yourself, it is unlikely that you have made it copy protected.
The VOB files can be copied straight from the disc (ie: with Windows Explorer) and loaded into the programs described.
