File sizes on DVD rips
The next video I want to make will involve ALOT of DVDs, and I plan on using the AVisynth plugin technique to edit.
In SmartRipper, I have the option to set the total size I want the DVD ripped as. The default is 4 gigs, but I need to scrimp and save space. So my question is, if I set it to 2 gigs instead, will it drastically effect the quality of the footage? Do you have any suggestions related to settings in the case that I do set it to 2 gigs?

I've raised the file size to 8 gigs before... I don't think there was much difference. But if it cut the file size when I lower it, what does that mean when I raise it?

I believe REd is right- to the best of my knowledge, SmartRipper does nothing in the way of encoding or the likes- setting the maximum filesize does just that- sets the maximum size that each .vob file ripped to can be. It's very useful when you, say, want to back-up a DVD to a CD-R- you just tell SmartRipper to use a maximum file-size the size of a CD, and it splits it up into nice CD-sized chunks.
I'd say your best bet to conserve space is going to be to use the suggested method from the new guides- i.e., making 'dummy' files at a low bit-rate and high compression, editing with those, and then swapping them out for the full-res and quality .avs files. Still, you'll need a good amount of space. And be sure to keep good track of your files so things don't get messed up when you switch them out before the final output.

Yo, SS, it's me, VashtheStampede from MTT and VashtheStampede over at the old Ere forum. Anyways, It doens't effect the quality or anything, it just sets the program to split the files up at one size. For example, if I wanted to rip a 9GB DVD into one big 9-10GB VOB file, I could set the max size for a 10GB limit and it'd make it one big 9-10GB VOB. If I wanted to burn a CD set with VOB files on it, I'd make it so SmartRipper splits the vobs into 695MB chunks.Super Sapien wrote:The next video I want to make will involve ALOT of DVDs, and I plan on using the AVisynth plugin technique to edit.

Thanks, this is good to know. It'll save me the trouble of sifting through gigantic files in Premeire.

I don't know if it will save you much time at all. You'll still have to sift through quite a few "smaller files". If you spilt say a typical DVD that has 5 - 6 GB of data on it into a bunch of 600MB chunks. You'll get 10 600MB chunks. How does this help you at all? Maybe you'll need a clip from each chunk? Then you'll have to have all the chunks on the hard drive. No matter what you'll need 6GB of freespace each time you chunk the vobs out just so you can sort out which chunks you'll need. Without actually being able to see what clips you need before ripping and then selectively choosing only the vob files you need you're pretty much screwed.Super Sapien wrote:Hey! You can make a d2v file off of a DVD drive. Then just cut clips you want off of there. Though you'd have to use huffYUV to do so, so you don't loose quality.
Other then that your next option is to get a bigger hard drive :\

Nah, I say it'll save me time because it's a pain to look back and forth through a 20 minute file while working in Premeire. Besides that, I know I'm not going to need a whole lot of clips from one vob as compared to the rest because it's a various. This way, I'll be able to look through the smaller vobs ahead of time and delete what I don't need.
I don't have the money to buy a bigger hard drive right now, or I would, trust me. This is what I'll have to do for now.
