Questions about DivX 5.x

I tried searching this forum but couldn't find what I'm looking for.. I'd like to know about the technical aspects of DivX 5.x as opposed to 4.12, which has worked fine for me for a long time without problems. I've avoided upgrading because of the 'adware or pay' licensing thing that have going on and because I was afraid of new bugs/issues and never bothered testing. So I'm asking you people out there who have used it your opinions on how it stacks up. I've heard it gets better quality for the bitrate and has some new features, etc. How true is this, from what you've seen, and are they issues/quirks I should be aware of? Thanks for your input.

In my opinion (emphases on opinion) here's how it stacks up...

Divx 5.x (free): Oh you want quality? OK!! just a little pain in the ass spyware here.... and viola, 50 billion MB! Oh you want it at an affordable size?

Well I'm not planning on using the adware version at all. But If I understand you correctly you're saying the pay version compresses especially well correct?

Also I've come up with some other questions about DivX 5.x. Is there an option to keep the older version and have it coexist with the newer one? I'd like to provide two different DivX versions of my videos without using a second machine. Also, what's the deal with this MPEG-4 file format it can output? What can play that format, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of it? Thanks.

Okay...

DivX4/5 are run by a commercial enterprise. They want to charge for a codec that mainly made it's start off of illegal activities(DivX3.11a DVD/Cam rips). DivX4 had problems just overall general picture quality, 2pass didn't really work that great and it had poor support for DivX3.11a playback.

As for DivX5. I would not reccomend using it. I just don't like the idea of giving a corporation money for something I used to get for free and doesn't offer much improvement. I believe that DivX5 was starting to offer b-frame ability but they have a horrid implementation of it.

The community here, I hope, is moving on to XviD w/ the LAME MP3.
XviD(DivX backwards BTW), is a open source project which is free and is based off of some of the same work that DivX4/5 were based off. The DivX.com guys when off to make a pay codec and the XviD community is working on it for free together.

XviD is always being updated, has better 2-pass encoding(if you ask me atleast), I THINK b-frames are finally being added to it(or are added already?). Plus it's $FREE$ and not run by some commercial interest.

Also I use ffdshow to playback pretty much ALL of my mpeg4 varients(it supports DivX3/4 & 5 along with XviD). Heheh, I see no reason at all to have any DivX4/5 codecs installed on my computer ^_^

So my suggestion: Screw DivX5 and use XviD.

I will never use XviD because I don't want people to have to download yet another damn codec just to watch my videos. I'd much rather just use MPEG or something else that everyone already has.

DivX3.11a is illegal
DivX4 plays stuff back very shittily
DivX5 that spyware hoopla surrrounding it(well the playback only codec has no spyware, but some people stay away from them just because of the fact that they do use spyware in SOME of their products).

Pretty much back yourself into using MPEG1

Which is starting to get rather outdated ^_^

They dont.

If you read the guides it will tell you how to encode an xvid video that can be played back by the divx 4 or divx 5 codec.
