Ripping scenes

Post by slickwilly102 » Sat Jan 04, 2003 3:13 am

I was reading the guides and I had a question. I want to rip just scenes or at the most chapters of my DVDs so I can make music videos. I have a DVD-ROM in my computer at the moment. My goal is to get just certain scenes and clips rather than the whole movie or episode. Is there any way to tell which vob. files are which? How large are the usual vob. files on a DVD? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

The slackers way of checking vobs would be to use winDVD. Set the audio as you like, and subs to "off." Then find scenes, WinDVD tells you which Chapter and Volume you are using then memorize (or better yet jot down) the info. After you do this a couple time you will learn to anticipate the vobs and soon you will no longer need to waist countless hours on finding scenes!

There are a few things you can do. First, if you have a standalone DVD player, throw the disc in there. If not, use a software DVD player that has an info overlay (powerdvd is my fave. I've got 6 copies of it now. Want one? ^.~) Then find out how to display the chapter information. some players I've seen have LED readouts on the front. If not, start the film and skip to the next chapter and see if it displays the chapter in the corner somewhere. If not, see if your DVD player has an "info" button. That'll definately call up the chapter information. PowerDVD displays the chapter info both as an overlay and in the toolbar. When you find the chapter you want, fire up SmartRipper and go into "movie" mode. This will by default, select the largest video track set and virtually concatenate the vobs for processing. Next to it is a list of chapters. Uncheck all except the one you want. Rip, convert with your favorite program (flaskmpeg/dvd2avi) and you're done.
