Looking for people using a ATI All-In-Wonder and Permiere

Post by rhkaloge » Sat Jan 25, 2003 3:35 pm

If you use a AIT All-In-Wonder, then you know that it comes with a Digital VCR that does all the capturing. While it has many, many settings for capturing, many of them seem to be propriatory - that is, I can only open them with the ATI file player, and NOTHING else will open them - not VirtualDub, not TMPG, and ESPECIALLY not Premiere. So can anyone out there with a ATI All in Wonder who edits in Premiere tell me how they do it?

That's odd. Years ago when I used the ATI AIW I just captured using "ATI VCR" and could use the files in Premiere. More recently, I used a newer model on someone else's system. For some reason, "ATI VCR 2.0" files were flaky in Premiere, but 1.0 files were not. This was with Win9x and Premiere 5.1, so I'm not sure about newer stuff.

Have you been able to capture with VirtualDub?

I don't think this will help you, but if anyone else needs to open ATI VCR files for some reason, ATI's made them available here:

Addendum: This page says "Some versions of the ATI Video Player/ATI Multimedia Center do not include the "VCR 1.0" and/or "VCR 2.0" CODECs." So perhaps the VCR codecs aren't showing up on your system.

(They're not the best codecs, by the way, but I'm just saying what worked for me in the past, and hoping something will work for you)

IIRC, the newest AIW cards capture to MPEG-2 and not AVI anymore...I've got a TV Wonder, and I just use iuVCR to capture. No fuss, no muss, and I can use any codec/res that I want, which is a definate bonus as ATI's win2k software/drivers are seriously messed up...

I always wondered this as well, though I never used it for amv sources, rather to capture TV broadcast and compress to burn on CD.

I have the AIW Radeon (the first one), not sure what you're all using, and my new system uses the DVD quality MPEG2 setting with no hassle. To use those, I load the clips into Ulead Media Studio Pro 6, which absolutely loves mpeg, cut out commercials and output to avi... yadda yadda and such.

Never did get ATI vcr files to work, which is a damn shame cause at one point (when I had a slower system) they were the sharpest captures I could acheive.

But, if you can get the mpegs to capture right, Ulead is the way to go to reoutput to bring into premiere. My card came with Ulead Videostudio, which is usable and also digs the mpeg files, but it wasn't anywhere near as powerful as Media Studio.

Dunno if that helps, but that's my story and experience with AIW.

or instead of using that crap ulead program, you could just record it in avi or mpeg-1 the first time :?

BTW, I have an all in wonder 8500DV and premiere.

True, but avis that don't look like ass are HUGE and mpeg 1 looks quite nasty by comparison. I only use the mpeg2 since it's sharp and reasonably sized for a source.

And don't criticise Ulead :x

That program was my first

didn't you just say that you were using Ulead to convert mpeg-2 to avi?
everytime you convert you lose quality. An avi is an avi, that's it. So if you recorded in avi in the first place, you save yourself the boot of that horrible program.

A AVI is not a AVI.

AVI is a container for different forms of data. The forms of data can be lossy or lossless. Converter lossy to lossy will create more quality loss. Converting lossless to lossless loses no quality unless you're doing colorspace conversion(RGB >YUV , YUV > RGB).

The only true lossless formats out for consumers is huffYUV and uncompressed. Anything else is going to be lossy.
